Zaïre-Emery waits in the stands as France’s World Cup spotlight skips him

🇫🇷

In the stands of a packed stadium, Warren Zaïre-Emery watches France’s World Cup celebrations unfold without him. The 20-year-old Paris Saint-Germain midfielder has not played a single minute in Les Bleus’ first five matches, including their quarter-final against Morocco.

Didier Deschamps has not included Zaïre-Emery in any starting line-up or substitutes’ bench during the tournament’s early stages. The omission has left the young midfielder sidelined, a situation that has reportedly taken its toll on him.

According to L’Équipe, Zaïre-Emery is struggling to accept his role as an unused substitute despite his pivotal contributions at Paris Saint-Germain this season. His club performances have been decisive, yet his international career remains stalled at the World Cup.

This is not the first time Zaïre-Emery has faced exclusion. Two years ago, during Euro 2024, he also watched from the stands without playing a minute. The repetition of his omission has deepened his bewilderment, particularly as his club form suggests he belongs among France’s key players.

Zaïre-Emery has recently voiced his dismay in conversations with the national team’s coaching staff, echoing concerns shared with close friends and family. His frustration is evident, though he remains diplomatic in his public remarks.

His standing within the squad appears to have slipped. Reports indicate he is now considered the fourth or fifth-choice midfielder, a sharp decline from expectations placed on him earlier this year. The possibility of Aurélien Tchouaméni suffering an injury could, however, force Deschamps’ hand and finally give Zaïre-Emery his long-awaited debut.

The young Frenchman’s anticipation is clear. The chance to wear the Les Bleus shirt in a World Cup match would mark a career-defining moment, one he has waited years to experience.

Léo Aschi’s report for GFFN highlights the tension between Zaïre-Emery’s club contributions and his international absence, underscoring the contrast between his Paris Saint-Germain heroics and his World Cup reality.
