Waterreus urges Wiegman appointment: 'Simply the ultimate Oranje coach'

🇳🇱

Ronald Waterreus has declared Sarina Wiegman the natural successor to Ronald Koeman as head coach of the Netherlands men's national team. In a column published today, Waterreus argued that Wiegman is the only candidate who can lead Oranje forward, dismissing other frequently mentioned names such as Arne Slot, Peter Bosz, Erik ten Hag and Pep Guardiola.

Waterreus expressed his hope that Nigel de Jong, the technical director responsible for the appointment, will act with boldness and disregard external pressure. He urged de Jong to prioritise merit over convention, stating that Wiegman’s credentials speak for themselves.

The former goalkeeper also addressed potential scepticism about a female coach leading the men’s team. He dismissed concerns as unfounded, pointing to Wiegman’s five FIFA awards as the world’s best female coach. For Waterreus, her appointment would represent a straightforward and logical decision.

He acknowledged the unlikelihood of the scenario, citing resistance within the KNVB to progressive change. Waterreus concluded with a direct appeal to Nigel de Jong, urging him to demonstrate the same fearlessness he once showed as a player and to appoint Wiegman without delay.

The debate over Oranje’s next coach continues amid speculation over multiple candidates, but Waterreus remains convinced that Wiegman is the solution.
