Schreuder rules out move after Van Persie exit

🇳🇱
Dutch football’s latest coaching carousel took another twist today as Dick Schreuder entered NEC’s boardroom the day after Robin van Persie’s dismissal at Feyenoord. The Gelderlander Schreuder moved to guarantee his position as NEC’s head coach for the coming season. Schreuder acted within 24 hours of Van Persie’s exit, informing NEC’s management that he would not leave Nijmegen. General director Wilco van Schaik subsequently confirmed that Schreuder would remain at the club. On Wednesday, following NEC’s first training session of the week, Schreuder echoed Van Schaik’s announcement. He stated: “I already knew this last season, but I had no desire to discuss it then. Many people spoke about me. I have a running contract. If things go well, interest in the coach will come, but it was never an option for me to make a move.” The 53-year-old coach stressed that his decision is final, even if an attractive opportunity arises. “No, nothing will happen, so it won’t occur. In football you can never promise anything, but I made this decision in my head a long time ago. I’m really looking forward to a new challenge at NEC, including the European adventure. That’s a huge challenge for the club.” Van Schaik’s public backing followed Schreuder’s proactive approach to end speculation about his future. Schreuder has led NEC since 2022 and guided the club to European competition this season.
