Monaghan’s extra man squandered in All‑Ireland quarter‑final
Monaghan manager Gabriel Bannigan lamented that his side failed to exploit a seven‑minute numerical advantage after Louth’s Sean Callaghan was sent off, as the Ulster county fell 0‑27 to 2‑18 and exited the All‑Ireland quarter‑final on Saturday at Croke Park.
Louth were reduced to 14 men after just seven minutes when midfielder Sean Callaghan received a red card. The dismissal gave Monaghan a brief numerical advantage that manager Gabriel Bannigan later described as a missed opportunity.
Monaghan managed a goal in each half but still fell 0‑27 to 2‑18. The defeat propelled Louth into the All‑Ireland final four for the first time since 1957.
Monaghan’s quarter‑final exit also means that no Ulster county will be represented in the semi‑finals, a situation not seen since 2016. This marks a significant shift in the provincial balance of the championship.
“I suppose it makes it all the more devastating for us that we didn’t make good use of that extra man and that’s on us,” Bannigan said. “We never managed to find a period in the game where we got completely on top, apart from probably the first seven minutes before the red card when we started really well.”
Bannigan added that after the early surge the team became “a little bit casual or a little timid,” with energy levels dropping and the side failing to create enough chances. “The game was very tight,” he noted, emphasizing the difficulty in stringing together scoring runs.
Monaghan were without their experienced goalkeeper Rory Beggan, whose injury forced Under‑20 captain Jamie Mooney into his senior debut at Croke Park. “Rory is a massive loss and it impacted us,” Bannigan said, praising Mooney’s potential but noting that testing on Friday evening left Beggan unavailable.
Louth’s victory secures their first appearance in the championship’s final four in nearly seven decades. Monaghan’s early exit forces the county to regroup ahead of next season without the prospect of an Ulster representative in the semi‑finals.
