Leipzig's public denial masks looming Diomande exit

🇩🇪 yesterday

Liverpool have opened a high‑profile pursuit of 19‑year‑old Ivorian forward Yan Diomande, who impressed in his debut Bundesliga campaign with RB Leipzig. Diomande arrived at Leipzig from Leganes for a reported £18 million fee last summer, signed a five‑year contract and netted 13 goals in his first top‑flight season, prompting the Premier League champions to formalise an official bid.

At 19, Diomande is already recognised as a Cote d’Ivoire FIFA World Cup prospect, having attracted attention beyond the German league. His 13‑goal tally in the 2023‑24 Bundesliga underscored a rapid adaptation to top‑level football.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes disclosed a willingness to spend up to €100 million on the player, split into €90 million upfront and €10 million in potential add‑ons. The club’s official bid was submitted last week, marking a concrete step after weeks of monitoring Diomande’s progress.

RB Leipzig publicly rejected the Liverpool offer, emphasizing that Diomande is not for sale at any price. The club also indicated a desire for the striker to sign a new deal that would include a release clause, leveraging the length of his existing contract.

Report author Lewis Steele wrote that, “Publicly, Leipzig are saying Diomande is not for sale at any price – and want him to sign a new deal with a release clause – but there is an understanding internally that they most likely will be forced to let him go this summer,” reflecting internal contradictions. Steele’s analysis suggests the club’s public posture may be a negotiating tactic rather than a firm decision.

Leipzig have recently dismissed head coach Ole Werner, appointing former Argentina defender Martin Demichelis as his successor. The termination is reported to cost the club a significant sum, potentially reducing the budget available for the summer transfer window.

Leipzig are reportedly required to generate around €100 million in player sales this market. Defenders Castello Lukeba and Lutsharel Geertruida have been linked with departures, indicating a broader squad overhaul.

If the club’s financial targets align, Diomande could become one of the few high‑value exits before the season ends. Liverpool’s pursuit will likely intensify as the summer window approaches, with both sides aware of the looming deadline.
