Derksen doubts Verbruggen’s all‑roundness despite World Cup heroics

🇳🇱

Johan Derksen remains unconvinced of Bart Verbruggen’s overall quality despite the Dutch goalkeeper’s standout display against Morocco at the World Cup, where the Netherlands were eliminated after a penalty shootout. Derksen’s skepticism contrasts with the keeper’s crucial saves that kept the team in contention.

Derksen said, “If he gets balls on goal, he has good reaction. But I don’t think he’s an all‑round keeper who is also good for his goal.” He emphasized his view on Verbruggen’s abilities.

He added, “I see now experts, in quotation marks, shouting that this is the future keeper of FC Barcelona or Real Madrid.” The comment reflects the hype surrounding the 23‑year‑old.

Derksen acknowledged that Verbruggen “has had a few good saves.” He highlighted a spectacular save against a shot by Soufiane Rahimi, describing it as a great intervention.

In the penalty shootout, Verbruggen nearly stopped Rahimi’s attempt, but Derksen said he was unlucky, calling the moment “lullig.” The miss contributed to the Netherlands’ exit.

Former FC Twente and Vitesse player Theo Janssen praised the performance, stating, “You can’t blame the boy. He kept a great match.” Janssen referred to Verbruggen as the goalkeeper of Brighton & Hove Albion.
