Chelsea’s defensive rebuild accelerates with £47m Palestra signing
Chelsea have moved to plug a defensive void after a disappointing tenth‑place Premier League finish last season. The club secured 21‑year‑old Italian international Marco Palestra from Atalanta on a seven‑year contract for a reported £47 million fee, including add‑ons.
The signing marks the first transfer completed under new manager Xabi Alonso, who officially took charge on Wednesday. Italian media had previously linked Marco Palestra with a move to Inter Milan, but Chelsea outbid the Serie A side with a larger financial package and wage offer.
Palestra made his senior debut for Atalanta in December 2023 before impressing on loan at Cagliari last season. His loan spell earned him the Serie A Defender of the Season award.
Speaking on the club’s website, Marco Palestra said, “A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world.” He added that the presence of “so many talented players… a very strong squad and manager in Xabi” makes the move exciting.
Chelsea’s first Alonso signing: versatile youth defender arrives
Alonso now inherits a defence reshaped by the summer exit of Marc Cucurella, who departed for Real Madrid. Reports suggest Chelsea are also weighing a bid for Crystal Palace centre‑back Maxence Lacroix to complement Palestra. Full‑back Malo Gusto, a former Lyon player currently paired with Lacroix for France at the World Cup, appears set to leave with Manchester City among interested clubs. Chelsea is understood to value Gusto at around £75 million. An £8 million offer for Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka was rejected as the club seeks to offset the potential loss of Argentina international Enzo Fernandez. Fernandez informed the hierarchy in May of his desire to depart, and Chelsea will consider offers reported at £120 million. The new signing gives Alonso a cornerstone for a revamped back line, but integrating Palestra and navigating pending departures will test the club’s transfer strategy. Chelsea’s next steps include finalising any bids for Lacroix and managing the financial balance of the incoming and outgoing deals.
