Brighton clinch £50m Vuskovic signing as Barcelona step back
Brighton & Hove Albion have secured a £50 million deal for 19‑year‑old Croatian centre‑back Luka Vuskovic, with £46 million in fixed payments and £4 million in performance bonuses, after reaching an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur. The defender will sign a contract running to 2031 and undergo a medical in the United States.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Brighton have concluded a full agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for Vuskovic. Tottenham will keep a 20 percent sell‑on clause and preferential rights, pushing the total value of the transfer above £50 million.
Brighton identified Vuskovic as a rare blend of defensive solidity and ball‑playing ability, noting his capacity to launch attacks from deep positions. His composure under pressure and ambidexterity suit the club’s desire for a modern centre‑back. The defender’s ability to shift to the left side of central defence adds tactical flexibility for the Seagulls.
Barcelona had monitored Vuskovic for months, seeing him as an ideal long‑term investment for Hansi Flick’s projected style. Flick’s plans value a centre‑back who can initiate play, maintain composure and operate comfortably on either side of the back line, qualities Vuskovic demonstrated during his loan at Hamburg.
However, Barcelona’s difficult financial situation forced the sporting department to prioritize other squad areas over a costly young defender. The club ultimately chose to address more urgent needs, leaving the Vuskovic pursuit in the background.
Brighton’s acquisition secures a promising defender on a contract until 2031, bolstering their defensive options for the coming seasons. For Barcelona, the missed signing means they must continue searching for a suitable centre‑back compatible with Flick’s philosophy. Tottenham’s retained clause ensures they benefit financially if Vuskovic’s value rises.
