Ajax's strategic push for ter Stegen: Barcelona backs loan

🇪🇸

Marc-Andre ter Stegen is on the verge of leaving Barcelona for Ajax on a season‑long loan, with both clubs having agreed on the financial framework of the deal. The agreement includes a purchase option, pending official documentation and a medical examination before the goalkeeper can travel to Amsterdam.

Ajax’s persistence and the arrival of Michel as head coach proved decisive. Michel had already pushed strongly to sign the goalkeeper during the January transfer window, bringing him to Girona on loan and immediately making him first choice.

The Girona spell was cut short by a muscle injury, limiting ter Stegen’s appearances before he missed the remainder of the season and Germany’s World Cup campaign. Michel’s influence was a major factor in convincing the German international to choose Ajax again.

Ajax will require a comprehensive medical examination in Amsterdam before finalising the loan. Ter Stegen has fully recovered from back problems and the hamstring surgery that ended his previous campaign and is declared fit for the new season.

Barcelona will continue paying a significant portion of ter Stegen’s wages because Ajax cannot absorb the full salary of a player still under contract until 2028. The Catalan club hopes the 34‑year‑old enjoys an outstanding season in the Netherlands.

By rebuilding his market value and attracting permanent offers next summer, Barcelona aims to pave the way for a definitive transfer. The loan therefore serves both clubs’ strategic interests.

For Ajax, securing a world‑class goalkeeper on loan strengthens their squad depth and provides stability between the posts. The included purchase option gives them flexibility should the loan prove successful.
