Tottenham shatter transfer record with Tonali deal
Tottenham Hotspur have secured the services of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, agreeing a base fee of more than €105 million. With performance-related bonuses, the total could exceed €116 million, setting a new record for the London club in the current summer window after protracted negotiations.
Tottenham had tracked Tonali for an extended period, previously submitting a bid exceeding €92 million. Newcastle United rejected that offer, demanding a higher price before any deal could be reached.
The two clubs eventually reached an agreement, with the base fee set above €105 million and potential bonuses lifting the sum to over €116 million. This makes Tonali the most expensive acquisition in Tottenham Hotspur’s history.
Tottenham’s £100m splash beats Manchester City in midfield race
Arsenal reportedly engaged in personal discussions with the Italian midfielder, while Manchester City monitored the transfer closely. Neither club succeeded in matching Tottenham’s final terms. Tottenham’s summer activity also includes the arrivals of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke. These additions reinforce a squad already active in the market. Tonali arrived at Newcastle United in the summer of 2023, moving from AC Milan for roughly €60 million. He spent four seasons in the English Premier League before this latest move. During his spell at Newcastle, Tonali made 110 appearances, contributing ten goals and ten assists. His performances attracted interest from several top clubs across Europe.
