Romero pushes for Spain move as Barcelona eye Tottenham defender
Argentine defender Cristian Romero has told Tottenham Hotspur he wishes to depart the Premier League club this summer, targeting a move to Spain. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have both expressed interest, with the Barcelona side listing the centre‑back among their preferred options despite current financial constraints.
Romero informed Tottenham that he wants to leave the club this summer. The Argentine international is currently representing Argentina at the FIFA World Cup and says he is ready for a new challenge after several seasons in England.
Barcelona remain interested in Romero but have placed the centre‑back target on hold while they prioritise signing a striker. Their top summer target is Julian Alvarez, Romero’s Argentina teammate, who is considered the priority signing.
The Catalans argue they already have sufficient options in central defence, naming Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Ronald Araujo and Gerard Martin as available. Jules Kounde can also be deployed as a centre‑back if required.
Head coach Hansi Flick decided against adding another defender, expressing confidence in left‑sided centre‑back Gerard Martin and approving Andreas Christensen’s two‑year contract renewal despite the Dane’s injury‑hit previous season.
Barcelona had initially considered selling Ronald Araujo to free up funds, but his reduced playing time at the World Cup due to injury has lowered the likelihood of a transfer. The club captain has also made clear he wishes to remain at Barcelona despite a diminished role.
Romero is highly regarded by former Barcelona midfielder Deco and by Hansi Flick, who both have praised his qualities as a centre‑back.
