Romano: Tottenham’s Cody Gakpo pursuit hinges on one condition

🇬🇧
The Kop’s mood has shifted. Where once Cody Gakpo was cheered, now the Anfield faithful chant for his exit. The 27-year-old’s final season under Arne Slot brought flashes of brilliance, but his refusal to adapt to Liverpool’s reshaped tactics left the club’s attack unbalanced. Now, with Iraola installed, the Dutchman’s future is under review—every player is treated as a new signing, and those not deemed up to scratch face the exit door. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Tottenham’s interest in Gakpo, but Liverpool are not yet entertaining offers. The Reds have not opened exit doors, nor have they told Gakpo he can leave. According to Romano, negotiations can only begin if Spurs send a formal proposal. “One thing I wanted to mention guys is Cody Gakpo,” Romano said on his YouTube channel. “Keep an eye on Tottenham for Cody Gakpo. Because they have interest in the player. As of today—beginning of July—they are not opening doors to an exit, they are not telling Gakpo he can leave or telling Tottenham they are open to negotiations.” Romano stressed that no deal is guaranteed at this stage. “This is not happening now. We have to see later on this summer, in case Tottenham really open talks by sending a proposal. At the moment there is an interest. If they send a proposal they have to see what happens there.” Gakpo’s value remains significant despite last season’s uneven form. The attacker has been a key part of Liverpool’s attack since his arrival, contributing 50 Premier League goals or assists over four seasons. He has single-handedly won matches for the Reds in the past, and his talent is undeniable. Slot valued him both as a player and a person, starting him regularly. However, Gakpo’s refusal to adapt to Liverpool’s tactical shift under Iraola has weakened his position. Liverpool will demand a substantial fee to release Gakpo. His new contract, signed recently, includes terms that reflect his importance to the squad. The club’s fifth-place finish last season—barely securing Champions League football—has intensified pressure to reshape the squad. Financial constraints mean any exit must bring significant funds to fund incomings. Tottenham’s summer spending spree has already reshaped their ambitions. With a new manager and a clear plan, Spurs are targeting high-profile additions. Gakpo’s profile fits their profile: a proven Premier League performer with Champions League experience. His Dutch nationality may also align with their recruitment strategy. Romano’s update Liverpool are not yet in a position to sell. The ball is in Tottenham’s court. Until Spurs make a formal approach, Gakpo’s future remains uncertain. The coming weeks will determine whether the Dutchman’s Anfield career is nearing its end—or if he can rediscover the form that once made him a Kop favourite. For now, the only certainty is that Tottenham must act first.
