Peterborough clinches versatile Irish defender as Wrexham exit looms

🇬🇧

On a damp evening at Peterborough United’s London Road ground, the club confirmed the permanent arrival of 27‑year‑old Tom O'Connor on a three‑year contract after his loan spell was cut short by injury. The Irish under‑21 international had featured 19 times for the Posh during the 2025‑26 season following a three‑year deal with Wrexham signed in July 2024.

O'Connor joined Wrexham AFC in 2021 and contributed to three consecutive promotions from the National League to the Championship. He is a versatile defender capable of playing in midfield.

The loan to Peterborough United lasted the entire 2025‑26 campaign, during which O'Connor made 19 appearances across all competitions before an injury ended his spell early. Despite the setback, the club secured his permanent transfer with a new three‑year deal.

Luke Williams, Peterborough United manager, praised the signing, saying, “Tom is an excellent player so we are really pleased to have him back with us.” He added, “He is a strong character, it is brilliant news for us.”

Before arriving at Wrexham, O'Connor began his professional journey at Southampton and later had spells at Gillingham and Burton Albion. He moved to Wrexham in January 2022.

Phil Parkinson, Wrexham’s manager, wished O'Connor well, stating, “I’d like to wish Tommy all the best and thank him for his contributions at Wrexham Football Club over the last few seasons.” O'Connor left Wrexham after 115 appearances and eight goals.

O'Connor’s permanent move underscores Peterborough United’s ambition to strengthen a squad that has recently climbed the English league system. It also highlights the fluid career paths of versatile Irish players navigating between the lower leagues and higher tiers.
