Liverpool's next defensive spark: why Mari Ward's signing matters

🇬🇧

With 86 appearances and six goals for Bristol City, 20‑year‑old defender Mari Ward has signed for Liverpool, ending her contract with the Championship side. The move was confirmed by an official club press release this morning, and the 20‑year‑old will join the Reds after her Bristol City deal expires.

Ward began her senior career in the FA Women’s National League with Plymouth Argyle before moving to Bristol City in the summer of 2022. Her time at Plymouth gave her exposure to senior football at a young age.

She was part of the Bristol City squad that captured the Barclays WSL2 title in the 2022/23 season. The following campaign saw her involved with the side as it competed in the top‑flight Women's Super League.

Across all competitions, Ward amassed 86 appearances and scored six goals for Bristol City. Her consistency earned her a regular role in the defensive line.

Ward has represented England at youth levels up to the under‑23 team. These caps underline her potential on the international stage.

Ward expressed her enthusiasm about the move. After joining Liverpool, Ward said, “I’m so excited, Liverpool is such a huge club with such big history so to be a Liverpool player now is really special. I’m an attacking full‑back who likes to get forward and get back, I like to create and join in attacks. I hope I can learn so much from the good players and good coaching staff around me and take it all in as much as possible, and then show what I can do on the pitch and reach my potential. I can’t wait to put on the Liverpool shirt for the first time, it’s going to be so special. And to walk out as a Liverpool player it’s still unreal to think about that so I can’t wait for that moment.”

Ward becomes Liverpool’s third acquisition of the summer transfer window, adding depth to the Reds’ defensive options. The club aims to strengthen its back line ahead of the upcoming season.
