Four‑year deal for Salzburg winger: why Swansea bet on Yeo
Swansea City have secured Red Bull Salzburg winger Moussa Yeo on a four‑year contract with a 12‑month extension option, reuniting him with head coach Vitor Matos as the Championship side seeks to refresh its wide options after the departures of loan players Manuel Benson and Gustavo Nunes.
Yeo, born in Mali, joined Red Bull Salzburg in 2022 and spent time on loan at FC Liefering before making his senior debut for Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga against Hartberg in May 2024. His early exposure to top‑level football in Austria set the foundation for his development.
In his first full campaign with Salzburg’s first team in 2024‑25, Yeo recorded six goals in 32 appearances. The previous season he featured 30 times across all competitions, netting two goals, one of which came in a 3‑2 Europa League loss to Aston Villa in January.
Matos, who served as assistant to Pep Lijnders at Salzburg in 2024, praised Yeo’s attributes, describing him as a player who will bring creativity, energy and versatility. He added that Yeo can operate in multiple positions, possesses good game understanding and should adapt to the Championship’s physicality and intensity.
The signing expands Swansea’s attacking options alongside Ronald, Eom Jisung and Zeidane Inoussa, while existing squad members Cameron Congreve, Florian Bianchini, Melker Widell, Leo Walta and Ollie Cooper also provide depth on the flanks.
Yeo follows centre‑back Stephen Welsh in joining Swansea this summer, and Leo Walta’s permanent move to the club has also been finalised, underscoring the club’s broader recruitment drive.
While the transfer fee remains undisclosed, the deal reflects Swansea’s strategy of tapping into the Austrian Bundesliga market to reinforce the wing positions after the exits of Benson and Nunes.
If Yeo adapts quickly, his versatility could help Swansea improve the areas Matos identified as needing a next step, adding a creative spark to the club’s Championship campaign.
