City legends endorse Maresca, signal confidence for Guardiola era

🇬🇧

Enzo Maresca steps into the role of Manchester City manager, taking over from Pep Guardiola. His appointment has already earned public endorsement from two City legends, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and former right‑back Kyle Walker, who each praised his coaching and character.

Ilkay Gundogan, who won multiple titles with Manchester City, said the Italian coach possesses “amazing qualities” and is “smart and knows exactly what he does.”

Kyle Walker described the hiring as a clever move for the club. He added that Maresca must prove he can succeed at Manchester City.

Maresca served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant during the 2022‑23 season. In that capacity he acted as a bridge between the players and Guardiola. He also previously managed Manchester City’s Elite Development Side.

At Chelsea, Maresca guided a 3‑0 victory over Paris Saint‑Germain in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final. Cole Palmer said the manager devised a game plan to exploit the spaces left by PSG.

Maresca also spent time as manager of Leicester City. Walker noted that his knowledge of Manchester City’s philosophy should aid his cause.

The endorsement from two City legends suggests a smooth transition as the club seeks to extend its recent dominance.
