Chelsea’s first Alonso signing: versatile youth defender arrives

🇬🇧

Chelsea have completed the signing of 21‑year‑old Marco Palestra from Atalanta on a seven‑year contract, making him the first player recruited by head coach Xabi Alonso as the club rebuilds for the 2026‑27 season. The Italian defender arrives after accelerated negotiations and interest from Serie A champions Inter Milan.

After the transfer was confirmed, Palestra said the opportunity to join Chelsea was impossible to ignore. “One of the best clubs in the world wanted me,” he said, adding that he is excited to meet the fans, his teammates and the manager.

Palestra also revealed that Xabi Alonso has already outlined his tactical ideas, explaining how he wants the team to play. The 21‑year‑old’s versatility, able to operate on either flank as a full‑back or wing‑back, fits those plans.

The signing addresses a gap left by Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid earlier this summer, which left Chelsea short of experienced options on the left side of defence. Palestra’s ability to cover both flanks offers a direct solution.

On loan at Cagliari in the 2025‑26 campaign, Palestra made 37 Serie A appearances, scored one goal, provided four assists and was voted Serie A Defender of the Year as the club retained top‑flight status. His form also earned him his senior Italy debut earlier this year.

The defender progressed through Atalanta’s renowned academy, broke into the first team in Bergamo and gained senior experience before the loan spell. These steps underline his development trajectory.

Alonso’s experience using wing‑backs at Bayer Leverkusen and his flexibility at Real Madrid align with Palestra’s pace, athleticism and ambidexterity, promising a smooth adaptation to the Premier League. The seven‑year contract gives Chelsea a long‑term, youth‑focused option while providing Palestra a platform to develop under the new manager.
