Burnley's manager hunt stalls as Edwards rejects offer
Rob Edwards has declined Burnley’s approach to become manager, a decision that follows the club’s failed attempt to appoint Wales head coach Craig Bellamy. Edwards, who was dismissed by Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month after their relegation, remains unattached as the Clarets resume their search.
Burnley identified Edwards as a leading candidate after negotiations with Bellamy collapsed. The Bellamy talks fell apart over disagreements about the composition of his coaching staff.
Edwards arrived at Wolves from Middlesbrough in November, tasked with rescuing the season. Despite his efforts, the club could not avoid the drop from the Premier League.
Several Wolves players expressed disappointment at his departure, including full‑back Kieran Trippier, who had only recently joined the club.
Edwards is still praised for his earlier success with Luton Town, guiding the Hatters to Premier League promotion by winning the Championship play‑offs in 2023.
Burnley’s shortlist now reportedly includes Steve Cooper, who left Danish side Brondby last month. Cooper previously led Nottingham Forest back to the Premier League in 2022 and has also managed Leicester City and Swansea City.
The Clarets’ pre‑season programme begins on July 10, leaving little time for a new manager to prepare the squad. Burnley will travel to the United States for matches against FC Cincinnati, Columbus Crew and Real Salt Lake before facing Ajax and Espanyol in Europe.
