Voormalig Frans Valbuena joins Maltese second‑division side Santa Lucia FC
52 international caps underline the profile of Mathieu Valbuena, who completed a transfer on Sunday to play the coming season with Santa Lucia FC, a Maltese second‑division side in the Challenge League. The former French international will add his experience to a club aiming to bounce back to the top tier.
Valbuena initially signed a one‑year contract with Santa Lucia, with a clause that automatically triggers an option for a second season once he reaches a predetermined number of appearances. The clause ties his future to on‑field contributions rather than a fixed term.
The midfielder arrived on a free transfer after training with the reserve team of Olympiakos. Being transfervrij means Santa Lucia did not pay a transfer fee, allowing the club to allocate resources elsewhere.
Santa Lucia FC, based in the south of Malta, was relegated from the Premier League in 2024 and now targets an immediate return to the highest level. The club’s ambition is explicitly linked to Valbuena’s experience and leadership on the pitch.
Speaking to L’Équipe, Valbuena said, “Age is just a number. I will stop only when I truly cannot contribute on the field.” The quote reflects his personal motivation to continue playing despite being 41 years old.
Valbuena first made his name in France with Olympique Marseille and Olympique Lyon before moving abroad to Fenerbahçe and later Olympiakos. His career spans top leagues in France, Turkey and Greece, showcasing a breadth of experience.
Internationally, Valbuena earned 52 caps for France, scoring eight goals, and was selected for the World Cup squads of 2010 and 2014. He also lifted the French league title in 2010 with Marseille, adding a domestic honour to his résumé.
