Real Madrid welcomes Eli John Ndiaye back after brief NBA spell

El Real Madrid confirmed on Monday the return of 22‑year‑old Eli John Ndiaye to the white squad after a brief spell in the NBA, ending a year‑long overseas adventure that began with a move to the United States (Estados Unidos) and his attempt to break into the league.

The Spanish‑Senegalese wing‑pivot, a product of Real Madrid’s Valdebebas academy, first arrived in the capital at age 13 in 2017, later earning MVP honours in the EuroLeague junior competition before debuting under Pablo Laso. He also featured in the Liga Endesa semifinal against Unicaja before departing for the United States. The club’s statement was distributed by EFE Europa Press.

NBA stint and injury setbacks

Ndiaye attracted the Atlanta Hawks in June 2025 after helping Real Madrid secure a third Liga Endesa title, prompting a move to the United States. A left‑shoulder labrum tear suffered during a national team camp required surgery, and the Hawks terminated his contract on 31 December.

He then joined the G‑League side College Park Skyhawks, posting averages of 8.1 points and 6.9 rebounds over nine games. The Hawks recalled him for the Summer League, where he shot 40 % from three‑point range.

Real Madrid secures his return

Valencia Basket submitted a formal offer on the final day of the right‑of‑first‑refusal period, but Real Madrid matched it to retain Ndiaye’s rights, reinforcing a squad that recently added Jaime Pradilla and appointed coach Pedro Martínez.

Martínez, known for a dynamic system that values mobile interiors, sees Ndiaye fitting his scheme. The 22‑year‑old will compete for minutes alongside Edy Tavares, Sarr, Gaby Deck, Chuma Okeke, Pradilla and Mikael Jantunen, aiming to fill the void left by Mario Hezonja.

Now back at the Movistar Arena, Ndiaye is determined to add new chapters to his Real Madrid story, confident that his NBA experience has hardened him for the challenges ahead.
