Mark Bosnich hospitalised after World Cup penalty save

8 June 2026

Former Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Bosnich was hospitalised after rupturing a quadriceps muscle during a World Cup promotion event.

The incident occurred while Bosnich saved a penalty from Gillon McLachlan, former AFL boss and World Cup promotion organiser. Bosnich required immediate medical attention following the injury.

Bosnich, 54, underwent initial scans at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. Surgeons confirmed the need for surgery to repair the ruptured muscle.

The World Cup promotion event featured Bosnich alongside other Australian football legends. McLachlan organised the event to raise awareness for the World Cup bid.

Recovery timeline for Bosnich remains uncertain pending surgery. His participation in future events is now in question due to the injury.
