FC Groningen May Boycott Ajax Play‑Off Semi‑Final Over Fan Ban

🇳🇱 18 May 2026

FC Groningen expressed strong anger after its supporters were told they cannot attend the upcoming match against Ajax in Volendam. The club says the decision leaves its fans excluded from a crucial fixture.

The fixture is the semi‑final of the Dutch play‑offs that determine the clubs qualifying for European competition. Both teams are vying for a place in the continental tournaments.

The ban on Groningen fans applies specifically to the match to be played in Volendam, a neutral venue. The club argues the restriction is unjust.

General director Frank van Mosselveld said the club is weighing its options in response to the fan ban. He indicated that a boycott is being considered.

Van Mosselveld added that a boycott of the semi‑final is not being ruled out at this time. He emphasized that the club will decide based on how the situation evolves.

If the boycott proceeds, Groningen would forfeit its chance to compete for European qualification in that round. The club hopes the dispute can be resolved before the match.
