World Cup

Wieffer still waiting for first World Cup minutes with Oranje

Mats Wieffer has yet to make his World Cup debut for the Netherlands, despite the 26-year-old defender’s pragmatic acceptance of his situation. The Brighton & Hove Albion right-back remains hopeful of featuring in the tournament’s next phase after Oranje secured top spot in their group.

Wieffer admitted his inclusion in Ronald Koeman’s squad came as a surprise, revealing to that he was informed of his selection on a Wednesday training session after the season. "When I had to come in for two extra sessions and then heard on Wednesday that I was in the squad, I was of course very, very happy. But to say I expected it would be a big word," he said.

Oranje completed their group stage unbeaten and advanced as group winners, yet Wieffer remains unused. "I obviously hoped for minutes, especially since we’d already qualified, but we didn’t discuss anything beforehand. The most important thing is that we’ve won."

The 26-year-old, drafted in by Koeman specifically for the right-back role, insists he harbours no frustration over his lack of playing time. "I already think it’s amazing to be here. We have a great group and there’s a lot of laughter, so that creates a good atmosphere. I have absolutely no problem with my role, though of course I hope to play at some point during this tournament."
