Sweden’s attack versus France: Schwarz sees pressure as key
Former Arsenal midfielder Stefan Schwarz says Sweden possess the attacking firepower to test France’s defence in their World Cup Round of 32 clash tonight, pointing to the form of Anthony Elanga, Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres after a mixed group stage that included a win over Tunisia and a draw with Japan.
Schwarz praised Sweden’s resilience after the Japan game, noting Graham Potter’s bold goalkeeper change and the team’s comeback. He highlighted Anthony Elanga’s standout performance and Victor Lindelöf’s successful adaptation to a new position, which helped secure the draw.
He said Sweden enter the France match with confidence, recalling the opening group victory and the draw against Japan as positive signs. Schwarz described France as possessing the best attack, with pace, power, flair, technical ability, depth and quality across the pitch.
While acknowledging few weaknesses in the French side, Schwarz believes Sweden can succeed by pressuring the defence. He suggested feeding the ball forward to Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres and Anthony Elanga to exploit any lapses.
Schwarz compared the two attacks, naming Sweden’s trio of Isak, Gyökeres and Elanga against France’s Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise, and asserted that Sweden’s attackers have the potential to cause damage.
He singled out Anthony Elanga as a possible secret weapon, noting the youngster’s confidence and desire to impress in every game. Elanga’s recent performances have shown his ability to create chances.
When asked for a score prediction, Schwarz envisaged a tight contest, with a draw after 90 minutes and the possibility of a penalty shoot‑out, while recognising France as the favourites.
