Inter's defensive dilemma: why John Stones remains off the radar

🇮🇹

John Stones, the 32‑year‑old former Manchester City centre‑back, is again being pitched to Inter Milan by his representatives, but the Italian giants show little appetite despite needing defenders after the departures of Stefan de Vrij and Francesco Acerbi. The Nerazzurri are also courting Chelsea centre‑back Trevoh Chalobah, with an asking price of €30 million plus €5 million in add‑ons.

Multiple Italian reports say the agents representing John Stones have renewed contact with Inter Milan, presenting the defender as a viable option. Stones became a free agent after his Manchester City contract expired, ending a ten‑year spell at the club.

Stones' résumé includes 257 Premier League appearances and 62 Champions League matches. Despite this experience, Inter do not appear eager to secure the English centre‑back.

Italian clubs Napoli and Juventus have also been listed as potential destinations for Stones. The defender’s agents have highlighted interest from several Serie A sides.

Stones is prepared to accept a significant reduction from the €10 million per season he earned at Manchester City. He seeks a two‑year contract with an option for a third, a term clubs are hesitant to guarantee.

Inter Milan, known as the Nerazzurri, need at least one, possibly two, new defenders after saying goodbye to Stefan de Vrij and Francesco Acerbi at the end of their contracts. They are also locked in a transfer battle with Como for Chelsea centre‑back Trevoh Chalobah, priced at €30 million plus €5 million in add‑ons.

On May 25, 2026, Stones appeared at The Co‑op Live Arena in Manchester to present the 2018/2019 Premier League trophy, a reminder of his achievements with Manchester City.
