Feyenoord’s midfield gamble: could 33‑year‑old Vanaken make the move?

🇧🇪
Belgian midfielder Hans Vanaken, 33, earned his first start for the Red Devils in a 5‑1 World Cup victory over New Zealand, after the group‑stage win, prompting Dutch media to question whether Rotterdam’s Feyenoord should approach Club Brugge for the experienced playmaker. Belgium secured the group‑stage title by beating New Zealand 5‑1, marking the Red Devils’ first win of the tournament and Vanaken’s debut as a starter. The decisive victory came on Wednesday evening as Belgium prepared to face Senegal in their next match. In the Dutch podcast “Rondje WK” from , journalist Geert‑Jan Jakobs opened his discussion by saying, “I especially enjoyed Hans Vanaken.” He added that Vanaken, although never a standout for the national side, is a hero at Club Brugge and a “quick thinker who delivers good passes.” Vanaken has spent the majority of his career at Club Brugge, where he became an icon without ever moving abroad. His long‑term presence at the Belgian club has been a constant despite the presence of compatriot Kevin De Bruyne in the same generation. Jakobs noted that Vanaken is 33 and has one year left on his contract, questioning whether he still wants a move and if he would be affordable for a Dutch side. He suggested that Feyenoord could benefit from a quality midfielder, saying, “Feyenoord? Yes, who knows. They could use a good midfielder.” Feyenoord’s newly appointed sporting director Dévy Rigaux, who previously worked with Vanaken at Club Brugge, is familiar with the Belgian’s abilities. Rigaux’s recent appointment adds a personal link but does not guarantee a transfer. Given Vanaken’s age, contract length and the unlikely financial terms, a move to Rotterdam appears highly improbable. The speculation is likely to remain a dream for Feyenoord.
