Benfica miss Champions League for first time since 2008

🇵🇹 17 May 2026

Benfica have failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 17 years. The club's latest season ends without a place in the group stage or qualifying rounds.

The last season Benfica missed Champions League qualification through the Portuguese league was 2008/09. At that time, Quique Flores was head coach and the team finished third in the Primeira Liga.

The 2008/09 season marked the previous gap in European participation, after which Benfica reached the Champions League every campaign. The 17‑year run included regular appearances in both group stages and qualifying phases.

This season's failure ends the uninterrupted streak and leaves Benfica without the competition's revenue and exposure. The club will now focus on domestic objectives and alternative European tournaments.

Missing the Champions League could affect the club's budget and transfer plans, as the competition provides significant financial rewards. Benfica will need to adjust its strategy to compensate for the shortfall.

Looking ahead, Benfica will aim to rebuild and target a return to the Champions League in the coming campaign. The club's management will assess options to restore its European standing.
