Ajax lock down teenage defender as Feyenoord loses out
Ajax have secured 16‑year‑old defender Miles Aalbersberg on a three‑year professional contract that runs until mid‑2029, announced today through the club’s official channels. The youngster, a product of Ajax’s academy since 2017, becomes the latest addition to the Dutch giants’ youth ranks.
Ajax identified Aalbersberg as a promising defensive prospect because of his physical profile and technical skill. The 16‑year‑old describes himself as a tall, strong defender who can also operate in midfield, offering positional flexibility for the club.
Aalbersberg has been in the Ajax youth system since 2017, progressing through the ranks. Last season he featured for both the Ajax O16 and O17 sides, and he will continue with the O17 squad in the coming campaign.
Reflecting on the deal, Aalbersberg said, “It is a wonderful moment to sign my first professional contract. When I heard I could play here, it was fantastic.” He added that Feyenoord also approached him, but he declined.
He cited Dutch international Matthijs de Ligt as a role model, noting that “Matthijs de Ligt is someone I look up to. Then you dream of standing on the pitch with him.”
Aalbersberg expressed a desire to reach Ajax’s first team and become a regular starter, stating his goal is to “reach Ajax 1 and be a starter.” He also mentioned an ambition to experience championship victories.
The defender is eligible for both the Netherlands and the United States at youth level. He said he has not yet chosen his senior allegiance but intends to decide soon.
For Ajax, the signing secures a home‑grown talent who could bolster the defensive line in the years ahead. For Aalbersberg, the contract provides a clear pathway to senior football at one of Europe’s most renowned academies.
