United’s €100m gamble: will Bouaddi anchor their midfield future?

🇬🇧

Manchester United are preparing to make a decisive move for Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, with a reported valuation of between €80m and €100m. The 18-year-old midfielder has become one of the standout performers at the World Cup and is now being tracked by four of Europe’s leading clubs. United’s interest comes as they seek to reshape their midfield, with replacing Casemiro identified as a key priority under Michael Carrick.

Lille’s valuation reflects Bouaddi’s rapid rise. Olivier Létang has set a price tag between €80m and €100m, while the French club would prefer any deal to include a one-year loan to allow further development. That structure could appeal to clubs with a long-term vision, though it may complicate United’s immediate need for a midfield solution.

Carrick’s rebuild aims to balance security with progression. Bouaddi’s profile—technically gifted, physically mature, defensively strong and aerially dominant at six feet one inch—aligns with the qualities Carrick values from his own playing career. The manager may see Bouaddi as a partner for Kobbie Mainoo, whose ability to progress play could benefit from a more defensive-minded midfield presence.

The competition for Bouaddi is intense. Manchester City, Arsenal and Bayern Munich are all monitoring the situation closely, each equipped with strong recruitment structures and financial power. Paris Saint-Germain, however, are understood to be prioritising a winger, removing one major rival from the race.

United’s challenge is whether they can move quickly enough. The club have previously missed out on midfield targets, and hesitation could prove costly once the bidding begins. Bouaddi represents a significant investment in potential rather than guaranteed output, but the price of elite teenage talent is rising. If Carrick views him as the right profile to replace Casemiro, supporters may see this as a project worth pursuing despite the risk and cost.
