World Cup

Mexico's first‑half blitz secures round‑of‑16 spot

In front of a roaring Azteca Stadium crowd, Mexico secured a place in the World Cup round of 16 after a blistering first half that left Ecuador trailing 2‑0 at the break, a score that held until the final whistle. The match began an hour later than scheduled because of a thunderstorm, but Mexico pressed forward from the first minute. Seventeen‑year‑old Gilberto Mora showcased his talent with dribbles, passes and several attempts on goal. The opening strike came from winger Julian Quinones, who had also scored against South Africa earlier in the tournament. He drove the ball into the top corner after a precise pass sent him into the depth, putting Mexico ahead 1‑0. Ecuador, coached by Sebastián Beccacece, appeared unsettled and struggled to create clear chances. Mexico, under Javier Aguirre, displayed the sharpness that the visitors lacked. Striker Raúl Jiménez, back in the starting lineup, arrived late in the box and finished a cross to double Mexico's lead at 2‑0. His goal cemented the dominance established in the opening half. After the interval Ecuador gained more possession but failed to generate serious opportunities. Defender César Montes threatened twice with dangerous headers, bringing Mexico close to a third goal while Ecuador recorded no shots on target. In injury time Ecuador were reduced to ten men when Piero Hincapié raised his hand to former Feyenoord player Santiago Giménez and received a red card for covering his mouth during a heated exchange. The dismissal left the South American side unable to mount a comeback. Mexico's World Cup journey continues with a round‑of‑16 clash against the winner of the England‑Congo match on Wednesday evening at 22:00. The Azteca Stadium will again host the decisive encounter amid the fervent support of the home fans.
