World Cup

Australia erupts after Jordan Bos’s injury sparks tackle controversy

On a scorching World Cup evening in Qatar, Jordan Bos of Feyenoord collapsed after a hard challenge, his teammates watching as the Australian medical crew lifted him onto a stretcher. The left‑back’s injury came in first‑half injury time of the Australia‑Egypt group match, igniting fury among the Socceroos.

The challenge came from Egyptian defender Rami Rabia, who drove Bos to the ground with a hard tackle. Bos remained on the pitch writhing in pain before being carried off on a stretcher and later confined to the dressing room.

Rabia walked away with only a verbal warning from the referee. Assistant‑coach Paul Okon described the incident as “a terrible tackle” and questioned why the official did not issue a yellow card.

Australian head coach Tony Popovic voiced his anger from the sidelines, directing his criticism at the officiating crew. Several Australian teammates also lodged complaints with the fourth official over the perceived lack of punishment.

Team‑mate Jackson Irvine said, “I couldn’t see exactly what happened, but it’s not pleasant to see him with a knee brace. We hope it ends well for him.”

The Socceroos medical team announced that it is consulting with Bos’s club Feyenoord regarding his treatment and the next steps. The Australian federation released a statement confirming the collaboration.

The match concluded without Bos, ending 1‑1 after 120 minutes and proceeding to a penalty shoot‑out. Egypt emerged victorious in the shoot‑out.
