Liverpool’s development gamble: 16‑year‑old Josh Abe on US tour
On the training grounds at Anfield, 16‑year‑old winger Josh Abe received his Liverpool shirt as head coach Andoni Iraola announced his inclusion in the club’s 31‑man squad for the upcoming US pre‑season tour, a move that contrasts with big clubs offering six‑figure weekly wages to teenagers.
Iraola confirmed that Abe is part of the initial 31‑player roster for the USA tour, joining goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and fellow forwards in the travelling party. The squad will travel to the United States for a series of friendlies before returning to Merseyside.
Abe has been hailed as one of England’s most exciting young wingers, attracting several offers from clubs across Europe. One proposal even included a professional contract worth up to £50,000 per week.
He turned down those offers and instead signed scholarship terms together with a pre‑contract for a three‑year professional deal. The contract will commence when he turns 17 in July 2027.
Liverpool have reportedly given Abe clear assurances of a pathway to the first team. He is expected to receive a senior squad number for the 2026‑27 campaign.
Academy reporter Lewis Bower noted that Abe already displays maturity beyond his years. His decision‑making in the final third and solid defensive contributions set him apart from his peers.
The England youth international will feature as Liverpool face Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds United on the US tour. The squad is scheduled to return to Merseyside next month.
Also named in the 31‑man list are academy top scorer Kieran Morrison and recent signing Will Wright. Striker Jayden Danns missed out after suffering a hamstring injury.
The full roster includes goalkeepers Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman, defenders such as Joe Gomez and Calvin Ramsay, midfielders Curtis Jones and Stefan Bajcetic, and forwards Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike and Josh Abe. Their inclusion creates a blend of experience and youth for the pre‑season fixtures.
