Leeds' second‑half surge exposes Liverpool's frailties

Andoni Iraola returned across the Atlantic with a heavy mind after Liverpool saw a two‑goal advantage evaporate and a defeat at Leeds in Chicago, leaving the new boss under pressure and forcing Daniel Farke to confront a pivotal moment for Leeds. The loss forces Iraola to consider giving starts to two teenagers, while the result fuels Farke’s push for a top‑half finish.

Early in the Reds’ final pre‑season match, young defender Luke Chambers opened the scoring and Florian Wirtz added a second, putting Liverpool on course for a perfect tour. Those goals gave the side a 2‑0 lead before the break.

At halftime both managers made a flurry of changes; Leeds introduced Dominic Calvert‑Lewin, Wilson and others, while Liverpool withdrew Wirtz, Isak, Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni. The fresh faces sparked Leeds, who began to dominate the second period.

The game unfolded at the home of the NFL Chicago Bears, where two American‑football‑style throw‑ins helped Leeds overturn the deficit. Calvert‑Lewin scored a brace, and Joe Rodon and Sean Longstaff also found the net for Daniel Farke’s side.

Liverpool’s defence crumbled further as senior backs remained unavailable – Jeremie Frimpong limped off, while Joe Gomez, Conor Bradley, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni were all out, and captain Virgil van Dijk did not travel on the tour.

Despite the setback, teenage prospect Rio Ngumoha, still only 17, impressed, and 19‑year‑old Trey Nyoni commanded midfield play, suggesting they could earn starts in the upcoming season.

Farke, who narrowly avoided dismissal last December when Leeds were in the relegation zone, switched to a back‑five and has since guided the club to an FA Cup semi‑final and a strong run of form, reinforcing his position.

Looking ahead, Liverpool must decide whether Ngumoha will start the season opener, while Leeds eye further signings – James Trafford is expected to become a record fee signing and Wilson is a free‑transfer target – to solidify a push for a top‑half finish.
