Algeria faces coaching change as Vladimir Petkovic set to leave

Algérie’s Football Federation (FAF) has terminated the contract of 62‑year‑old Vladimir Petkovic, ending his tenure as head coach of the Fennecs, Selon La Gazette du Fennec, a few weeks after the team’s 0‑2 round‑of‑16 loss to Switzerland in the World Cup.

Petkovic took charge of the Fennecs in February 2024. During his tenure he recorded 24 wins, six defeats and nine draws.

He guided Algeria to the quarter‑finals of the most recent Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The campaign also secured the nation’s return to the World Cup after a 12‑year absence.

Months before the tournament, the federation extended Petkovic’s contract until July 2028, praising remarkable results since his appointment. The extension came despite an early 2‑0 defeat to Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Under his guidance, Algeria qualified for the knockout phase of the World Cup for only the second time, benefiting from the new 48‑team format. The team was later eliminated by Germany, the eventual champions, 2‑1 in the round of 16 in Brazil.

According to La Gazette du Fennec, the FAF is now looking to appoint a Spanish manager. Au moment de la décision, the federation believes the Spanish school’s playing principles match the traditional qualities of Algerian players.
