Amorim's redemption: from Sporting crisis to Milan's new era

🇮🇹

AC Milan's failure to secure a Champions League spot leaves the Rossoneri facing a season without top‑flight European football, putting new head coach Rúben Amorim under immediate pressure to revive the club's continental ambitions and to satisfy a demanding fanbase still reeling from last‑season disappointment.

In 2018 Sporting failed to qualify for the Champions League on the final matchday after an unexpected defeat to Marítimo away, plunging the Verde e Brancos into a crisis.

Three years later the same Sporting side captured the Portuguese league title for the first time in 19 years, a triumph that even the fans could hardly believe, and it was achieved under the guidance of Rúben Amorim.

Amorim began his managerial career at Sporting after a playing stint with Benfica, taking charge of the Eagles' fiercest rivals and settling the potentially delicate situation where it mattered most: on the pitch.

Much of his mental resilience is credited to his mother Anabela, who raised him alongside his older brother Mauro, providing a constant and loving presence throughout his life.

His coaching philosophy places the human element at the core, insisting that players are people first and that understanding the person precedes tactics, technique or any on‑field action.

Two clubs have already paid significant fees to appoint Amorim: Sporting paid €10 million to Braga in 2020, and four years later, in 2024, Manchester United paid the same amount to Sporting.

Just over a month ago AC Milan also missed out on Champions League qualification, a painful disappointment that the Rossoneri's new Portuguese head coach is well equipped to understand and move beyond.

Now Amorim's focus is entirely on AC Milan, where his intensity and determination will have just one common denominator: the Rossoneri colours, as the club prepares for the upcoming season.
