Cape Verde captain Ryan Mendes, 36, is under police investigation in Auckland for alleged rape, just one day after the island nation secured a historic World Cup knockout‑stage berth. The alleged assault is reported to have occurred on 27 March, when the team was in New Zealand for the FIFA Series. Cape Verde’s debut at a World Cup saw the side immediately qualify for the knockout phase, sparking nationwide celebration. Ryan Mendes featured in every match of the campaign, playing a central role in the team’s success. According to Brazilian newspaper O Globo, a Brazilian woman working as a translator for the Cape Verde national team alleges Mendes entered her hotel room and raped her. The complainant also claims she was beaten, bitten and strangled during the incident. The translator lodged a formal complaint with both FIFA and the Cape Verde football federation, explicitly requesting that Mendes be omitted from the World Cup squad. She reported receiving no response to her request. New Zealand police have confirmed that a criminal investigation is underway, though they released no further details. The New Zealand football federation told Brazilian media that the matter is in police hands and declined to comment further. FIFA announced it is aware of the allegations and is in contact with New Zealand authorities. Because the investigation is ongoing, FIFA said it will not make additional comments at this time. On 4 July, Cape Verde is scheduled to face Argentina in the next World Cup round, a daunting challenge for the tournament newcomers. It remains unclear whether Mendes will be included in the squad for that match.
