Utrecht's gamble on 19‑year‑old Chigozie Owen for instant impact

FC Utrecht announced today the signing of 19‑year‑old forward Emmanuel Chigozie Owen from Bayer Leverkusen, securing the German‑born talent on a contract that runs until 2030. Owen, who featured for Leverkusen’s U19 side last season, arrives eager to adapt quickly and earn regular minutes in the Dutch league.

Owen spent his formative years in the academies of Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen. In the 2022‑23 campaign he appeared in 24 matches for Leverkusen’s U19 side, netting 13 goals and providing seven assists.

He was also listed in the senior squad of Bayer Leverkusen, although he did not make an appearance on the pitch. The experience gave him exposure to a top‑flight environment without breaking into match action.

"The first time I came here, it felt like a warm bath," Owen said, describing his arrival in Utrecht, known locally as the Domstad. He added that his physicality and creativity allow him to contribute both in ball retention and in creating chances.

"My goal is to adapt here in the Netherlands as quickly as possible and to play as much as I can," he explained. The 19‑year‑old has signed a contract that runs until 2030, signalling the club’s long‑term commitment.

Whether he features for Jong FC Utrecht or the senior side is irrelevant to Owen, provided he continues to develop. Utrecht’s coaching staff expect his versatility to be an asset as he integrates into Dutch football.
