Lens' €5m gamble on Cuisance aims to replace Thomasson

RC Lens have secured the services of 26‑year‑old French midfielder Michaël Cuisance from Hertha BSC, signing him on a four‑year contract until 2030. The €5 million transfer makes Cuisance the club’s first summer acquisition for manager Dino Toppmöller as Lens prepare for next season’s UEFA Champions League group stage after finishing second in Ligue 1.

Cuisance had been contracted with Hertha BSC until 2029, and before moving to Germany he featured for Olympique de Marseille, marking a return to France’s top flight. His experience in both Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga adds depth to Lens’ midfield options.

His arrival is intended to fill the void left by midfielder Adrien Thomasson, who departed Lens for another Ligue 1 side after his contract expired. Thomasson’s departure opened a key creative role that Lens hope Cuisance will occupy.

Cuisance will wear the No. 27 shirt for Lens, a number previously unused by the club this season. The jersey choice reflects the player’s fresh start in French football.

The signing comes as Lens gear up for the UEFA Champions League group stage, a competition they will contest following their second‑place Ligue 1 finish. Participation in Europe underscores the club’s ambition to compete at the highest level.

Manager Dino Toppmöller, who took charge of Les Sang et Or last season, will integrate Cuisance into a midfield that already boasts several internationals. Toppmöller’s tactical plans anticipate Cuisance contributing both defensively and offensively.
