Aston Villa Wins Europa League, Emery Secures Fifth Title

🇩🇪 21 May 2026

Aston Villa secured the Europa League trophy after a 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg in Istanbul. The win marks the English club's first European title in 44 years.

Youri Tielemans opened the scoring with a superb volley before the break. Emiliano Buendía supplied a cross for the second goal, and Morgan Rogers completed the rout with the third.

Celebrations erupted in the English stand of the Istanbul stadium, spilled onto the streets of Birmingham, and even reached the skybox of Crown Prince William, a noted Villa supporter. Fans waved flags and sang the club anthem as the team lifted the cup.

Coach Unai Emery, 54, guided Villa to the triumph and claimed his fifth Europa League crown. He previously won the competition three times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal.

Villa's earlier European success came in 1982 when they captured the European Cup I in Rotterdam, defeating Bayern Munich. Reserve goalkeeper Nigel Spink became a club icon after stepping in early in that final.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez started the final despite hand pain, while Marco Bizot watched from the bench. Dutch defender Ian Maatsen was also named as a substitute.

Villa pressed from the opening whistle, creating chances against Freiburg, whose goalkeeper Noah Atubolu displayed his talent. The German side, reaching its first European final, proved outmatched by the English club.

The Birmingham side, a Premier League sub‑top team, entered the match with recent Champions League experience and a record of beating larger opponents. Their dominance was evident throughout the contest.

After 90 minutes of tactical adjustments and vocal direction from the sidelines, Emery celebrated his fifth Europa League triumph. Villa's comprehensive victory underscores their resurgence on the European stage.
